Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that the changed reality in Afghanistan required a change in the world community’s outlook as well, stressing that the well-being of the Afghan people has to be the utmost priority.
The premier expressed these remarks during a meeting with Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares Bueno on Friday who is on an official visit to Islamabad.
During the discussion, according to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the prime minister said that urgent measures were required to address the humanitarian needs of the Afghan people and to ensure the economic stability of the country.
He called for positive engagement of the international community to ensure the security situation in Afghanistan is stabilised, peace is preserved, and any mass exodus is precluded.
The official statement also said that PM Imran underlined the importance of a secure, stable and peaceful Afghanistan for Pakistan and the region.
FM Albares lauded Pakistan’s efforts to facilitate the evacuation of nationals and personnel of diplomatic missions and international organisations. PM Imran assured Islamabad’s continued support in this regard.
On the bilateral plane, the prime minister hoped that Pakistan-Spain relations would continue to be strengthened in all fields. He also lauded the positive role of the Pakistani diaspora in Spain.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Spain and both sides would commemorate this milestone through specific events, the PMO statement further said.
Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi also held wide-ranging talks with his Spanish counterpart. During the talks, views were exchanged on the latest developments in Afghanistan. Bilateral relations including cooperation in international fora were part of the parleys.
FM Qureshi said that Pakistan as an immediate neighbour of Afghanistan had paid an immense price because of prolonged conflict and instability next door.
He hoped that the new dispensation in Afghanistan will undertake concerted efforts for peace and security and work towards taking care of the humanitarian and development needs of the Afghan people.
Qureshi underscored that the international community must remain engaged and that the people of Afghanistan should not be abandoned. “There is a need to urgently provide assistance to ward off a humanitarian crisis and to take steps to ensure economic stability. In this regard, releasing Afghanistan’s financial assets is also a necessary measure,” he added.
The foreign minister apprised the visiting dignitary of his regional outreach on different aspects of the evolving situation in Afghanistan, which presented challenges as well as opportunities.
FM Albares invited FM Qureshi to undertake a visit to Spain.
